I have just read the article you linked to in the PI Newsletter - oh what a beauty!!! At last we have a sensible report telling the govern...

I am personally really glad that the debate I started - and which was my undoing! - is still pertinent and getting people to think about best practice which was always my intention. I'm feeling daring so I'd like to go out on a limb once again, and ask for people's views on the teaching of "spe...

Yes, quite right!! Sorry I wasn't meaning that to sound as though only educated mothers should be paid to stay at home! I believe that all mothers (or fathers) should have the choice to stay at home and look after their children. It was more to do with the lunacy of the situation in England at the m...

Reading Recovery

I read the following article in my local freebie newspaper the other morning whilst having breakfast  . PUPILS at a Derbyshire primary school have improved their reading skills so much that they are being given a national award. Stenson Fields Primary School introduced the Every Child a Reader...

Coffee quotes

A friend and I were having coffee this afternoon and mulling over the report into childhood unhappiness. We were discussing the fact that so many educated women are being forced into work, when actually they would really be great at staying at home and giving their children a good start in life. My ...

Report on childhood happiness and the "selfishness of a

Oh dear, now I'm really depressed :( As if its not enough to feel constantly under pressure as a teacher to get everything right, I'm now being slated for being a part time working mum. If you havent seen the news tonight (or only got as far as the snow!) a report has just been brought out blaming p...

Alert - curriculum review!

I went on a training course on Thursday and found out about the government review (by Jim Rose) into the Primary Curriculum. The trainer that was running the course (who was very passionate and inspiring) made a comment which rather concerned me. She says that Jim Rose has backpedalled somewhat on h...

Thank you Debbie, as always you have raised some very interesting points. Some of which I can answer and others I don't have enough info to be able to answer. One of the things I will say though, is that as a school they only send books home for parents to share with children, not books that the chi...

Time out to consolidate blending and segmenting skills?

A friend is having a debate in her school at the moment about whether to keep on introducing the phonemes at a rate of 3 per week or whether to take time out to consolidate segmenting and blending skills. Let me elaborate. They have 2 reception classes. So far they have taught all of PI Unit 1 GPCs ...
