LEARNING INTENTIONSThis is a time-saving resource for the teacher to use alongside the I CAN READ texts and their accompanying comprehension QUESTIONS for learners at ’Stage Two’, that is who are working within Units 6 to 12.

Print off a copy of the LEARNING INTENTIONS including the description of all the possible activities – and pin on the main display board.

Print off a half-sized version for all learners to keep in their personal phonics and spelling folders.

The learners will become very familiar with the overarching ‘learning intentions’ and all possible activities.

The teacher should be able to list the activities ‘by number’ for the whole class for any particular lesson, and variations for any groups or individuals within the class.

The learners can refer to the ‘numbers’ with their own copy or look at the copy on the display board.

The dictionary is designed to provide a ‘double page spread’ of an alphabetic code chart followed by double page spreads for every sound and its spelling alternatives. A spelling grid is provided to add the words as required. The grid lines can be used as ‘writing lines’. Information about spelling and suggestions for use are provided on the last page of the dictionary.

Focus Sounds and Spelling Alternatives Cards – for lesson introductionsThese cards can be used individually when teachers introduce the focus sound and spelling to the class or group. The teacher might say, “Today we are going to think about the /s/ sound, as in snake. We have already studied these graphemes [point to the ‘s’ and ‘ss’] and now we are going to learn more about this grapheme [point to the ‘ce’] as in the word ‘palace'”. The cards can be printed on card, or laminated, or simply kept in a folder with plastic sleeves. The teacher can call upon the cards in any order as new spelling alternatives are introduced throughout the programme.
