You have to be an academic linked to a research institution to write for 'The Conversation' and yet look how bad the advice for parents is in the article below - not a single reference to sounding out and blending or 'phonics' - only all the whole word learning of high frequency words and guesswork stuff - research warns us about the dangers of such advice:

The piece above is the opposite to the kind of advice I provide for parents - but then I'm not an academic in a research institution so 'The Conversation' editor would not be the least bit interested in what I have to say - despite it being backed up in abundance by academics in the research community!
