Please donate to charities for very underprivileged children

Please do take the time to read (and donate?) to this wonderful new Canadian charity - and it's associated charity in the UK: 'Life'.

http://www.lifeliteracy.org

Both charities are working very hard to create and support schools for West African communities where the need is very great indeed.

If you go to the 'Project' page at the Solon Foundation website, you will see the new school that has just been built. We at Phonics International are working collaboratively with the founders to bring basic literacy knowledge and skills to the children!
To address the wide range of student needs, the school arranges classes based on age and ability level and has a strong emphasis on literacy education. In addition to the core curriculum, students receive a focused literacy lesson every day. Starting in January, 2014, the school is excited to start piloting a phonetic literacy program, Phonics International, with the support of the Foundation.
Phonics International is supporting the charities to bring literacy to the children in the two schools linked to the Solon Foundation and to Life - and hopefully to the wider communities too.

We plan to build a webpage to describe more about this relationship over time.

The task for me was how to support teachers and learners in terms of the resources they have available to them, or that readily can be made available to them in remote and impoverished circumstances.

In other words, what are the most essential resources and information that can be used in very basic circumstances as you can see described via the Solon Foundation website - for teaching the English alphabetic code and the phonics skills.

The charity organisers and Phonics International Ltd take this literacy project very seriously indeed as we would like to find out how effective and replicable are the 'ingredients' for basic literacy skills in these special circumstances.

Here at Phonics International, we are calling upon people around the world who may have benefited from all the free resources and guidance we provide and who would be willing and who can afford to support these charitable organisations in such very worthwhile projects.

For example, if you have benefited from the any of the free resources via these pages, would you be prepared to donate to these worthwhile charities to support their projects please:

For some time, also, I have liaised with Andy Robson regarding his support for charity work in Mumbai - making sure street children get a good meal and teaching them basic literacy skills.

Andy discovered Phonics International via the internet, and has been acting as the go-between mentor for staff and teachers working in situ in Mumbai, India. We are also exploring ways of using the PI materials in challenging contexts with no, or little, internet accessibility.

You can read about this work here:

Here is the March 2014 update from Andy:

Hi Debbie!

Great to hear from you!

I have been using the [Early Years Starter Package] resources with the teachers in Mumbai but as they have limited computer access there, they often do not go to the website and find what they need! I really need to get it all printed out and laminated so I can take the resources out with me! That way I think it will be used more!

I am leaving my school in May to work more on my charity and go back out to india in June. Lots to do including assessing how well the children's English has come on in the last 12 months. I want to see how far the teachers have got with their phonics teaching. Many struggle as they get to the less common sounds.

I will take a look at the new resources [the 'Series of 8 eBooks']. They sound great and I am sure we can use them at the school that we have started in Mumbai! I will let you know when I have looked at them!

I am hoping to start a blog when I am out there which I am hoping to set up via the Street Life website. www.streetlifeindia.co.uk

The charity is really growing and there is lots of sponsorship and fundraising happening to really help us move forward . Over the next two years we are hoping to start projects in UK and Africa.

Thanks for getting in touch and hope we can continue to work together to improve the quality of life for these kids!

Andy

Just established, a brand new forum dedicated to developments of these wonderful projects in Africa and India.

Read Stephanie's detailed description of the launch of the 'Series of 8 eBooks' - the children delight at their first ever book like this and the lightbulb moment when adults and children discover that not only 's' but also 'ce' is code for the /s/ sound:
