What should teachers ask of themselves for teaching literacy

Whilst we are all 'teachers of literacy', I also suggest that all teachers should be knowledgeable about 'systematic synthetic phonics' and not just those who teach 'early reading' as described in Teachers' Standards:

Demonstrate good subject and curriculum knowledge … and an understanding of and take responsibility for promoting high standards of literacy, articulacy and the correct use of standard English, whatever the teacher’s specialist subject.
