Anne Glennie: TESS Bring on the Reading Wars

Post by debbie »

This is an excellent, thought-provoking piece by Anne Glennie re teaching freedoms in Scotland in comparison to England.

How ironic that the Scottish Clackmannanshire research gained world-wide attention and yet teachers in Scotland generally teach reading any-which-way:

In the Telegraph:
SNP accused of 'taking eye off ball' as literacy standards decline in Scottish schools

Official figures show drop in standards in primary and secondary schools
Why am I not surprised!

Anne Glennie, independent literacy and phonics consultant and trainer, launches her 'Phonics Forever' CPD course in Scotland and it has been extremely well-received.

This is what Anne just wrote to me privately - but I checked with her and she is happy for me to share:
Well, my very first Phonics Forever was a success! Phew! I really was working morning, noon and night to get everything ready. I’m surprised your ears weren’t burning with all the references to you and the fabulous body of work that is Phonics International. Out of the four schools represented, two have already booked inset off the back of the conference – so it’s been a super start. I couldn’t have managed it without your wonderful training, your slides and all of your advice to date – so thank you – I feel that, out of everything I have ever worked on, this is by far the most significant – and I truly feel I have found ‘my thing’. Knowing that the research backs up what I’m saying is giving me such confidence – and it’s allowing me to challenge the hopeless rubbish that Education Scotland are churning out. You can read the feedback here: http://www.thelearningzoo.co.uk/phonics ... -feedback/
Do check out Anne's feedback:

And - a hearty 'congratulations' to Anne Glennie - I have found her to be a remarkable lady - professional, knowledgeable, passionate and a wonderful, inspirational communicator.

If you are a teacher in Scotland, do look out for her events - I am confident that you will not be sorry and your pupils will benefit enormously.
